More comparison pictures against an original 360, Wii and both versions of PS3 over at Engadget. (

As I've said before, I'm absolutely sure there will be a cheaper 120GB of the S, maybe in white, released in time for Xmas.

It probably makes a lot of sense for Pioneer to pay the $4, as it gives them a USP. "One of the few (only?) receivers to which an iPhone/iPad can stream".

If it becomes more widely licensed, it's no longer a USP. It's probably not worth $4 any more, and competing standards will become more common.

guys, if you really want to make some SERIOUS word-processing, i suggest you to try the LaTeX system :)
LyX is what i miss most since i switch from linux to mac.

I agree, I just made the switch. Once you're familiar with LaTeX, which will take some time, you will think anything else (including Word) is crap. I use TeXShop (, which I think is good, but I haven't tried any others.

Great, now they will seal up all the doors and windows at Foxconn and cavity search the employees when the are allowed out. And some employees will just mysteriously disappear.

I think that Apple and the user community in general does itself a great disservice in touting the mhz myth as if it applied to everything. I was incredibly disappointed when I bought a G4 expecting the amazing performance attributed to the G4. It just wasn't there, a PIII at the same clock, 1 year older (and half the cost new), beat it by 10%! I felt ripped off and completely disenchancted with Apple. Things got a little better when the software I was using released a new version compiled on a newer compiler, but it was still behind by a few percentage points.

I've been using the iPhone's Google maps in that way for almost 3 years and I have not once had that be an issue.

I dunno, I guess something bad could happen, but it sure doesn't seem likely to me at this point. And even if it does happen to me soon I'm prepard for "once every 3 years" as a failure rate.

Ok, but when a road changes and you don't have the newest map then what are you doing? Manually downloading is what.

I'd rather it be an automatic process.

Both methods have drawbacks: "Not always available" vs. "Not always current."
Given that I've never had a problem with availability, I'm actually interested in an app that promises to stay current without my having to download maps manually ahead of time.

Since you are already using Google maps this way, then why pay $40 for a service? Traffic updates? Road directions? Talking to you? All fine things but I have also been using Google maps this way and have had refresh problems in areas of otherwise good coverage. I would pay for a map service which had a small local map (say one in a 200 mile radius of your main zip code) that I could have on board. Using over the air, I'll just stick with free google maps.

The camera units are the same. The one installed in the photo just has a removable foam piece for light insulation. It exists on the black iPhone 4 as well.

Well, if what you say to him works, you might actually be "effed", but sadly you won't remember it. Then you'll really wonder about the looks he gives you. :D

There was a study a bit ago that showed that complexity drastically reduced participation in altruistic activities, while simplicity -- especially exact instructions on how to participate -- drastically increased participation.

I think that's applies here. Using a Mac is so simple, generally speaking, that the folding@home pages seem obtuse in comparison. The pages are all ugly, and instructions are unclear, and files seem to be missing that instruction pages reference.

Well put, the instructions are way out of date, hard to follow for beginners and make references that are no longer valid.

To increase participation I recommend that a very clear communicator make a new thread (perhaps a sticky) with *dead simple* step by step instructions w/screenshots on how to install and turn it on (circa 2010). Maybe even a screen flow that just shows exactly how to it, hosted on a service with crystal clear video like Get our mirror neurons goin', yaknow?

Case in point, I'm having my own issues. Where exactly is the screen saver? On, it talks about it, and say to grab it off the download page, but I just can't find it. Makes me feel dumb, which is hardly what you want in a social endeavor.

As far as the screen saver, it no longer exists, which is why you can't find it. Sometime in the past it was deemed detrimental to folding because it was using up valuble resources the could be used for folding. And we all go through a 'feeling dumb' stage after which you go through an 'oh well I'll do the best I can' stage, which lasts as long as you continue to fold.

Beyond my notebooks, I also have 2 8 Core Mac Pro's I'd like to put into the game, but I really only want the processor power being used when they're idle. I need that power to myself at the other times. Screen saver or idle time processing is perfect.

It would be great to have your Mac Pros folding and I understand your concern. The clients are supposed to ease up as other process use more cpu power but I have read where this doesn't always seem to work as for someone using video software etc. I suppose you could try and see if it works for you and if not... There should be new cpu software sometime in the future that "may" work better, but we will have to see.

Second, I did install just the basic install of in the meantime. Activated the client in System Preferences, and hit the enable button. When does this thing activate? It's not showing any activity in Activity Monitor yet. I guess maybe this does idle time processing w/o any visual feedback?

It sounds like it might not be running properly, did you set up a username and team? I'm running a different client that doesn't work through the prefs pane but I'll try to get back to you with something that might help, in the meantime try here ( Good luck! Oh I forget to mention that they are having trouble getting enough work units out for everyone to crunch, maybe that is why your client isn't running...

I think to dictate what people should or shouldn't do with their machines is silly. Search the forums and the internet. The Air has proven to be plenty capable as a gaming machine for it's size and has many satisfied users talking about it.

I'm saying that's my personal opinion. I know it's capable of playing games, but many people are disappointed about something that no one knows except maybe Apple or Intel.

A computer is certainly a tool, but it can also be a gaming machine, a home theater pc, an entertainment hub, etc.; whatever a user may find use for it for.

Obviously, certain machines are better and worse at certain functions than others, but don't forget that this generation of MBA, there are people that actually did go out and buy the Air because one of the reasons is that it did happen to be a decent performer in games, while remaining ultra portable. In this case, I think the Air strikes an excellent balance between function and form.

Really? So if I buy a MBA, using your logic above, then one of the reasons I bought it was because it could play games. This is your opinion, your view of why some people buy a MBA. Just like what I said in my previous post was purely my personal opinion. Not dictation of anything. I'm sure many people agree with you and some that don't.

I use my Air for live music sets and this is exactly a scenario where such a BL KB would be grand. I read similar opinions from other musicians on this forum in another thread. Creative artists like live musicians can definitely find appropriate use for a backlit kb, but even average everyday users who don't share the same skill level as you would also benefit from it. If anything, adding convenience is always a welcome.

If you don't want or need the backlit kb, then you could always turn it off. It's there for people who might need it. Win-win situation.

That's you. I simply stated how I personally use my computer. It's different for everybody. Not everybody is like me or you. Not everyone is a musician or creative artist. Of course, the backlit keyboard is a welcome addition. I never said anything against that.

229 is a fair chunk of change for a start, and certainly a long way off the current pricing of the DSi. I for one would certainly wait for some deep price cuts, but knowing Nintendo that's unlikely to happen any time this year. I can't see parents being willing to drop that much coin as well - I reckon DSi sales will continue to be strong.

Second, it looks old. The design hasn't changed since the DS, bar a few tweaks, yet other hardware looks sleek and slim in comparison - even the PSPgo! Nintendo have to realise they're competing with Apple as well, and Apple know how to make things small and look good too. It looks fat, pocket-unfriendly and not modern.

Personally, 3D is rubbish - but that's due to my own eyesight. Hearing multiple reports that it only works from one very narrow angle? Not so good - but I'll reserve judgement until the public gets hands on them.

Finally, the battery life. Oh my days. Are we regressing here? 3.5 - 5 hours? Is that it? My iPad far outdoes that...

    Things I'd make better:
    1) Modern casing, not a boring box
    2) Battery life
    3) Cost
    4) Region lock
    5) Capacitive touch and ditch the stylus

That is one scary flick.
